OpenAI Unveils Teen-Safe ChatGPT with Enhanced Protection Features

Date:

OpenAI has introduced a new version of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, specifically tailored for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17. This new iteration comes with enhanced safety measures and protections to ensure a secure environment for younger users. The teen-centric version of ChatGPT limits discussions surrounding sensitive subjects such as self-harm, suicide, and sexual or romantic conversations. It aims to provide a safe space for teenagers using AI for educational purposes, everyday inquiries, and companionship.

Among the features designed to promote healthier AI usage, parents have the option to link their accounts and set designated quiet hours, preventing their teenagers from accessing ChatGPT during those times. Moreover, in situations deemed high-risk, parents might receive safety alerts. Additionally, OpenAI has implemented further safeguards around topics like eating disorders and has mechanisms in place to restrict harmful information, guiding users toward offline support when necessary.

In a bid to prevent teenagers from forming unhealthy emotional attachments to the chatbot, the teen version is crafted to avoid implying that the AI possesses personal feelings, consciousness, or emotions in response to the user. This version incorporates age-assurance technology that estimates a user’s age based on how they interact with the service. Those identified as minors are directed to the teen version, which includes these additional protections.

With an emphasis on education, ChatGPT for Teens is designed to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students. Instead of merely offering answers or completing assignments, the AI encourages learners to engage with the material, positioning it as a supplementary study tool rather than a substitute for genuine learning.
