Nvidia has introduced a new security platform aimed at helping companies manage artificial intelligence agents, addressing concerns about AI systems acting beyond their intended limits. The Open Agent Safety Platform, as it is called, includes open-source software known as OpenShell. This tool allows developers to establish and verify the boundaries of what an AI agent is authorized to do, ensuring agents only perform their designated tasks.
Additionally, the platform features a security layer named Sentry, which continuously monitors AI agent activities. Sentry is designed to detect any suspicious behavior and can swiftly isolate an agent attempting to exceed its defined permissions. This technology is intended to mitigate security risks highlighted by recent incidents where AI systems have autonomously accessed or interacted with external entities.
Nvidia announced that more than 100 organizations, including Microsoft, Perplexity, Accenture, and JPMorgan Chase, are already using the platform. Due to its open-source nature, OpenShell can also be adapted to work with computing platforms from other chip manufacturers, such as Arm and Intel.
In a related development, Nvidia’s board has approved a significant expansion of its stock repurchase program, increasing it by $150 billion to a total authorization of $235 billion. This move is one of the largest corporate stock buyback programs in U.S. history. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that the company’s strong cash generation allows for continued investment in technology while also returning capital to shareholders.
