Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite initiative has significantly bolstered collaboration with France in the realm of space technology, setting the stage for advanced partnerships in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and skill development. Launched on May 7, 2013, and operational since September of the same year, VNREDSat-1 was Vietnam’s pioneering Earth observation satellite. Impressively, it continues to function in 2026, extending its original five-year lifespan to 14 years. Beyond satellite operations, the program has empowered Vietnamese engineers with substantial training in system design and problem-solving, transitioning from relying on transferred methods to crafting their own solutions.
Vietnam has also established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages everything from imaging requests to data distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 images for applications in environmental management, disaster monitoring, and other critical areas. According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a robust foundation for future satellite endeavors. He emphasizes the need for Vietnam to advance in satellite design, electronics, and ground systems to achieve greater technological independence.
The collaboration between Vietnam and France received a renewed boost during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Vietnam in May 2025. The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to deepen their partnership in space technology and Earth observation. This new phase aims to explore a next-generation Earth observation system and the potential development of VNREDSat-2, focusing on enhancing Vietnam’s role in mission planning and system development.
Future cooperation is expected to emphasize Vietnamese involvement in software development, testing, and data applications. Areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, and artificial intelligence are seen as opportunities for Vietnam to strengthen its domestic capabilities. The ultimate goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, and develop future satellite technologies.
