Google Revives Glasses, Transforms Search with AI Overhaul

Google is significantly enhancing its search capabilities by integrating advanced artificial intelligence into its widely-used search engine, as announced at the annual Google I/O conference for software developers. The new AI model, Gemini 3.5, is designed to handle more complex and conversational queries, moving beyond the traditional keyword-based searches. This update aims to encourage direct interaction with Google’s chatbot, providing users with more visual search results and interactive suggestions, such as creating calendar invites or managing spreadsheets within Google’s suite of products.

Elizabeth Reid, head of Google Search, emphasized the magnitude of these changes, describing them as the most substantial updates in the nearly 30-year history of Google Search. As of this week, these updates are available globally on both desktop and mobile platforms. Users will notice search results that are more visually dynamic, akin to enhanced AI Overviews, although the classic list of links remains accessible under a “Web” tab. The introduction of AI in search has already seen a significant uptake, with chatbot-specific queries doubling every quarter since the launch of “AI Mode” a year ago.

The new features reflect Google’s ambition to create a “universal assistant” that is personal, proactive, and persistent, according to Josh Woodward, who leads the development of Gemini. Although the Gemini app has 900 million monthly users—less than the 900 million weekly users of ChatGPT—the expansion of AI agents into Google’s primary search product is poised to reach a broader consumer base. Subscribers to Google’s AI Pro and Ultra plans can now access “information agents” capable of conducting detailed research and providing summaries or action plans. Additionally, a “generative user interface” offers the ability to create customized visuals and interactive elements based on user input.

In a return to the smart eyewear market, Google, in collaboration with partners Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster, has introduced a line of “intelligent eyewear” slated for release this fall. These glasses, equipped with voice command capabilities and embedded cameras, will allow users to interact with the Gemini AI. Google’s previous attempt with Google Glass in 2014 was met with skepticism and ultimately discontinued. However, the current market, as demonstrated by Meta’s partnership with EssilorLuxottica for voice-activated, camera-equipped glasses, suggests a growing acceptance and potential for augmented-reality eyewear.
