In a recent shift in European aviation, Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport as the continent’s busiest hub, handling 8.15 million passengers in July compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This marks a significant change as Heathrow’s numbers dropped by 1.5% from last July, while Istanbul enjoyed a 2.3% increase in passenger traffic. The decline at Heathrow has been partly attributed to disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East.
The situation has intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s long-debated third runway. Currently operating at near full capacity with its two runways, Heathrow’s proposed expansion, estimated at £33 billion, could potentially boost its annual passenger capacity to approximately 150 million. Heathrow officials argue that such expansion is crucial to enhance the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism capabilities.
In contrast, Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and round-the-clock operations. The airport is already equipped with three runways, with a fourth runway anticipated to be operational by the end of 2026. This infrastructure advantage has allowed it to accommodate the increasing passenger numbers, further solidifying its status as a major international travel hub.
Meanwhile, other UK airports like London Stansted and Manchester have reported record-breaking passenger numbers for July. London Stansted handled 3.1 million passengers, while Manchester saw 3.4 million, indicating robust performance despite the challenges faced by Heathrow.
