British tennis player Sonay Kartal has reached her first WTA 1000 final, marking the biggest milestone of her career after defeating Jelena Ostapenko at the Wuhan Open. In an intense match on Saturday, the 24-year-old emerged victorious with a 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) win, showcasing remarkable resilience by coming from behind in both sets and saving six set points.
Kartal’s achievement is particularly significant given her recent return from a six-month hiatus due to a back injury. Her comeback has been impressive, with victories over established players including Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, and Elina Svitolina. Ranked world No. 170 at the tournament’s outset, Kartal now claims the distinction of being the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format’s inception in 2009. This run ensures she will break into the world’s top 50, surpassing Katie Boulter to become the new British No. 1 in women’s singles.
Against Ostapenko, Kartal demonstrated mental fortitude, overcoming deficits in both sets to secure the win through two demanding tiebreakers. She described the match as one of the toughest of her career, attributing her success to her strong mental game.
Kartal first gained attention by reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2025, although her progress was hampered by injury. Her performances at the Wuhan Open indicate a return to form, cementing her status as a rising force on the women’s tennis circuit.
In the other semi-final, Poland’s Maja ChwaliÅ„ska defeated Iga ÅšwiÄ…tek with a 7-5, 6-1 victory. ÅšwiÄ…tek struggled with a left-thigh injury, requiring a medical timeout and playing with her leg bandaged, which affected her performance.
