In a significant diplomatic move, Thailand and France have decided to elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership after official discussions between Anutin Charnvirakul and Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The meeting, held at the Élysée Palace, focused on broadening cooperation in several sectors including trade, investment, cybersecurity, and defense, as well as advanced technology. Both leaders also took the opportunity to review regional developments, particularly those involving Cambodia and Myanmar.
The two nations have expressed a mutual interest in enhancing collaboration in industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for concluding negotiations on the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement by the end of the year. This agreement, which originally commenced in 2013 and was halted in 2014, resumed discussions in 2023 and is anticipated to provide substantial economic benefits for both countries.
As part of their deepening ties, Thailand and France have pledged to enhance defense and cybersecurity cooperation, with a focus on combating cybercrime, online scams, and cross-border digital threats. On regional issues, Thailand emphasized its commitment to resolving border matters with Cambodia through peaceful discussions and adherence to international law.
Looking ahead, both governments plan to implement the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership 2026-2028, setting the stage for a formal strategic partnership. This plan outlines a framework for further cooperation and mutual growth between the two countries.
During his visit to Paris, Anutin also engaged with executives from leading French companies such as Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group to attract more investment into Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries. French companies showed confidence in Thailand’s investment climate, with Airbus announcing plans to expand its aviation and engineering operations in the country.
